2010 Distinguished Alumni Named

The Red Oak High School Alumni Association has named Dr. Joy (Cockerham) Shaw as the recipient of the 2010 Distinguished Alumni award.  Dr. Shaw graduated in 1956 from ROHS as the valedictorian of her class.  She had a 35-year career at Red Oak ISD from 1973 to 2008.  She retired as Director of Special Education, but had also worked as principal, bus driver, coach, teacher, GT mentor, cheerleader sponsor and even part time custodian.

Dr. Shaw was recently elected to the ROISD School Board continuing her family’s long-time commitment to Red Oak Schools.  Her father, Wallace Cockerham, was a ROISD School Board member for 20 years and her mother, Hazel Hitt Cockerham, was one of the ROISD Parent Teacher Association (PTA) founders. Dr. Shaw’s four children are all ROHS graduates, Deborah-1977, Pamela-1979, Rhonda-1981 and Scott-1983.

Dr. Shaw will be recognized at the Alumni Reception on Fri., Sept 10 at the high school before the Homecoming football game, and also during halftime.  The ROHS Alumni Association is proud of alumni like Dr. Shaw! Congratulations to her!
